CHEYENNE– Young hunters will have an opportunity to test their skills at the eighth annual Wyoming Youth Hunter Education Challenge to take place Saturday, June 28, at the Upton Gun Club.  In previous years, the competition was held in conjunction with the Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Heritage Expo in Casper.

The challenge consists of a junior division for those 14 years of age and under and a senior division for those 15-18 years of age.  Events include wildlife identification, a hunter safety challenge and hunting marksmanship using .22 rifles, shotguns and archery equipment.  To participate, youth must have completed hunter education and present their hunter education card at registration.  Entry fee is $10 and events will begin at 7:30 a.m. on June 28 and resume Sunday on June 29 if needed.  Those participants desiring to compete only on Saturday, June 28, can check in and start at 7 a.m.

The event is sponsored by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department Hunter Education Program, Upton Gun Club and Wyoming Friends of the NRA.  It is patterned from a similar competition conducted by the National Rifle Association.  More detailed information including registration and specifics concerning the various events is available from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department Hunter Education Program at (307) 777-4531.
