Spring Open House Set for McNenny State Fish Hatchery
SPEARFISH, S.D. – Renovation of McNenny State Fish Hatchery, west of Spearfish, has been completed and the public is invited to an open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. The open house is being held in association with the All American Kids Fishing Day, scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to tour the newly upgraded hatchery and learn more about the Northern Hills fish rearing and stocking program.
McNenny was built and operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 1951 to 1983 on land leased from the state of South Dakota. Operation of the facility was transferred to the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department in 1983.
The recently completed $1.6 million renovations include construction of a new fish rearing building, upgrades to the plumbing and electrical systems and improvements to the visitor facilities to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
In addition to touring the hatchery facility, visitors will have the opportunity to walk the newly expanded nature trail. This self-guided journey takes nature lovers through native plants, grasses and wildlife nesting areas, while providing a fun and easy learning experience for all ages. Trails are well maintained and marked with signs pointing out resident wildlife and native fauna.
Directions: Take I-90 west to Exit 2. Turn right at ramp bottom, then right onto service road. Follow McNenny State Fish Hatchery signs by turning left off service road. Again following signs, turn left into hatchery grounds.
