Oahe Downstream Hosts Kids’ Fishing Derby PIERRE, S.D. – Kids are invited to join in a morning of fun-filled fishing and prizes at Oahe Downstream Recreation Area near Fort Pierre on Saturday, June 21.

Kids are encouraged to pre-register starting June 16 at the Welcome Center at Oahe Downstream. Registration is also available at 9:30 a.m. the day of the event. Fishing begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 11:30 a.m. Immediately following the fishing, prizes will be awarded for the biggest, smallest, and most interesting catches of the morning.

Kids ages 16 and under can participate in the event; however, children eight and under must be accompanied by an adult during the event. Kids are asked to bring their own fishing poles and lures, as a limited number of poles will be available at the park.

The park is also seeking volunteers to help bait hooks, measure and weigh fish, and assist in supervising the event.

June has been proclaimed Great Outdoors Month by Governor Rounds, and this fun activity is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. There is no cost to participate in the fishing derby, but a park entrance license is required. Oahe Downstream Recreation Area is located five miles north of Ft. Pierre on Highway 1806, on the south side of Oahe Dam.
