CASSCOE – Hunting can be a difficult sport for able-bodied people, but for handicap hunters it’s almost impossible. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, in partnership with the White River National Refuge and the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation, is trying to make the sport a little easier for women with disabilities.
The partnership is offering a deer hunt at the Potlatch Conservation Education Center at Cook’s Lake in Casscoe and the White River National Wildlife Refuge. According to AGFC Regional Education Coordinator Phyllis Speer, the hunt is part of the “Becoming an Outdoors-Woman” program. The hunt is designed to expand the outdoor opportunities for women that have a permanent physical condition that severely impairs their mobility. “These women are fully capable of properly using a firearm to hunt game, but have restricted ability to access land for a quality hunting experience,” Speer said. “This hunt is an effort to provide proper access, facilities and other needed resources so these women can enjoy a safe and successful recreational experience,” she added.
The Potlatch Conservation Education Center is located on an oxbow lake adjoining the White River National Wildlife Refuge. The area is a bottomland hardwood ecosystem abundant in wildlife and beautiful scenery. The hunt will be a modern firearm hunt as described in the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission regulations. No dogs will be allowed in the hunt, nor allowed on the area during the hunt. Each hunter will be allowed to harvest two deer – one legal buck and one doe. The hunter will be allowed to hunt from Friday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. until Sunday, Nov. 16 at noon.
