July Fireworks at Raccoon SRA postponed until August 30
Cecil M. Harden Lake was constructed as a flood control reservoir by the Army Corps of Engineers. It serves as a part of the Comprehensive Wabash Valley Flood Control Plan. When areas downstream from the lake experience periods of heavy rain and rivers swell, the Army Corps of Engineers hold water in the lake to prevent further flooding.
The rain and flooding that affected much of Indiana over the last several weeks has caused the lake levels to raise over 25 feet. As a result all boat ramps except the main ramp located within Raccoon SRA. have been closed. Additionally the beach, south point shelter and many of the trails are also closed until lake levels recede.
Raccoon State Recreation area is on State Road 36 in Parke and Putnam counties in west central Indiana, 50 miles west of Indianapolis and 35 miles northeast of Terre Haute.
