LITTLE ROCK – Looking for a career change or the opportunity to work in specialized fields of enforcement? The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission could be just the place for you.

From now until Aug. 31, the AGFC is taking applications for its next class of wildlife officers. Becoming a wildlife officer is much more than just checking hunting and fishing licenses.

Does your mind’s eye conjure up images of a uniformed man or woman talking to a 4-H group? Being interviewed on television? Assisting other law enforcement officers, as the situation requires: on a manhunt or natural disaster? If not, you probably don’t have a realistic picture of what being a wildlife officer is all about, says Colonel Chris Carpenter, chief of the Commission’s enforcement division. “The picture that invariably comes to mind when you try to visualize a wildlife officer is one of a guy writing a citation to a violator. But that’s just a small part of the job our 160 wildlife officers do,” Carpenter explains.

The opportunity is available to work in specialized fields of enforcement such as the K-9 Unit, Dive Team and Special Operations Unit. The Commission is always looking for bright, versatile, highly motivated men and women to apply for jobs as wildlife officers. The competition is strong for these jobs. Normally, one out of every 20-25 qualified applicants will be accepted for employment.
