Reptiles, Fish T-shirts, ‘Animal Olympics’ Offered by GFP at State Fair

CLICK Photo To Visit Web SitePIERRE, S.D. – In addition to its popular aquariums and publications, the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department will be offering free hands-on, educational programming for visitors at this year’s South Dakota State Fair. GFP will also have staff members on hand at the department booth each day of the fair to answer questions.

The schedule of programs includes:

Thursday, Aug. 28: Chad Tussing, GFP educational services coordinator, will offer a casting range from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 29: Jody Moats, naturalist from Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve, will teach visitors about the reptiles of South Dakota and give people a chance to meet some of the reptiles. Presentations will be at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 30: The Outdoor Campus will be hosting an “Animal Olympics” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. GFP Senior Fisheries Biologist Geno Adams will be helping children make fish T-shirts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Wildlife Division will have a wide variety of publications and applications on hand as well as back issues of the Conservation Digest, the department’s popular bimonthly magazine. Youngsters are urged to look for copies of the twice-yearly Kids’ Edition.

The Parks and Recreation Division will also have many free publications available, such as the 2008 Park Times, the Tatanka and many other outdoor recreation publications on subjects as wide-ranging as birding, history and horse trails.

The South Dakota State Fair runs Thursday, Aug. 28 through Monday, Sept. 1, in Huron. The Game, Fish and Parks booth is located on Third Street inside the fairgrounds, just north of the DakotaLand Museum.
