Big Pool, Md. — The Maryland Park Service invites people to tour the historic Woodmont Lodge during a fall open house on Sat., Sept. 20, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Showcasing the beautiful 1930’s era Woodmont Lodge and surroundings, the open house enables visitors to see a treasure trove of antiquities and collectibles from the hunt club’s vivid past. Volunteers will answer questions and describe some of the rich history of the property.
“A visit to Woodmont Loge enables people to experience the early days of conservation and wildlife management in Maryland first hand,” described Angie Hummer, Ft. Frederick State Park Manager. “Many also say that the stunning lodge, built of native stone, can easily be called one of America’s castles.”
The lodge played host to numerous national sports heroes, including Babe Ruth and Gene Tunney, celebrities, and seven United States Presidents. Organized in 1870 as a premier hunt club, Woodmont was in continuous operation for almost 125 years.
Today the Woodmont Chapter of the Isaac Walton League and Fort Frederick State Park jointly manage the Woodmont Lodge and property. The Woodmont property is located off of Interstate 68 (Exit 77) to Woodmont Road. The lodge entrance is on the left.
