Give Back Opportunities Abound For Volunteers in IowaDES MOINES – Although school is back in session and summer has come to a close, the Keepers of the Land Volunteer Program of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources offers volunteers ample opportunities to continue to give back to our natural resources.

  • Creek Cleanup and Tree Planting Event:
    Volunteers are needed at a collaborative event involving the DNR, Polk County Conservation Board and Central Iowa Paddlers at Mally’s Weh-Weh-Neh-Kee Park in Des Moines Sept. 20. For more information contact Hank Vogel or Pat Spain at 515-323-5280.
  • Shooting Sports Opportunity:
    Officials at the Princeton Gun Range, located in Scott County, are seeking volunteers to assist with the construction of target stands and signs, repair shooting tables and remove empty shell casings and cartridges. This opportunity is available immediately on Fridays from 2-4 p.m. and is ongoing. For more information contact Jeff Harrison at 563-349-9418.
  • Frank Lloyd Wright House Visitor Center Opportunities:
    Members of the Friends of Cedar Rock State Park near Quasqueton are seeking volunteers to assist with greeting visitors and gift shop clerking at the Visitor’s Center, and providing tours of the Frank Lloyd Wright House.   • Trail Maintenance Opportunity:
    Officials at Wilson Island State Park are seeking volunteers to assist with various trail maintenance activities, including clearing brush and removing invasive species. This opportunity starts immediately and is ongoing. For more information contact Chris Anunson at 712-642-2069.
  • Prairie Management Opportunity:
    Officials at the Prairie Seed Production Plot near Adel are seeking volunteers to assist with various prairie seed production needs, including removing invasive species, harvesting seeds and planting prairie plugs.   • Prairie and Forest Burn Opportunity:
    Officials at Mines of Spain State Recreation Area are seeking volunteers to help with the burning tall grass prairies, savannas and forested areas within the park.
