If you own a watercraft, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants your opinion about boatlifts, docks and platforms. The information will supplement public meeting feedback contributing to the DNR’s rulemaking process for structures in public waters.
Watercraft owners are invited to go online at by Jan. 19 to take this first-ever, 27-question survey.
The DNR will name members for an advisory committee before the end of the year to provide input and review drafts of the rules revisions. A period for public comments and a public hearing on the proposed rules will take place in 2009. New rules are expected to go into effect Jan.15, 2010.
Legislation passed earlier this year requires the DNR to update rules and permit requirements on structures allowed in public waters by January 2010.
Those who do not have access to the survey online can call 651-259-5700 to request a paper copy. Results of the survey will be available online shortly after the deadline.
Minnesota has more than 880,000 licensed watercraft and is the third largest in per-capita watercraft ownership in the United States.
Those who don’t own boats but would like to express their opinion on structures in public waters can send comments via e-mail to or mail their comments to Docks and Structures Survey, DNR, 500 Lafayette Rd., St. Paul 55155.

why did the DNR Turn are lake into a lake that we can not use we lived on this lake for over 76 years we have a boat that we cant use thay the watershed turned the lake into a lily infested dead zone.Savage lake ramsey county minnesota was once a recreational lake till about 6 years ago till the the watershed took over thay just like god .No more boating witch we loved we keep the lake clean we had lot of wild life it all gone my wife is in her late 70s and I 8os we dont ask for much just get are lake back please .I hope to hear from you
I find it to be interesting to see that the folks that pay for all the betterment of the public lakes in Minnesota have little to say about what can be done with the property that they own and pay large amount of taxes. Those taxes charged by the counties that the lake is in. People who visit the lakes on rare instance should be glad that the folks on the lakes in our state care about them and take care of them for their once in a blue moon visit.
CAREFUL MINNESOTA YOU COULD DESTROY A GOOD THING THAT IS GOING ON.
LISTENING TOO PEOPLE WHO LEAVE GARBAGE AND THEIR WASTE AFTER THEIR VISITS TO OUR LAKES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO SAY AT ALL. T ALK TO THOSE WHO CLEAN UP AFTER THEM ON LONG WEEKENDS AND ICE FISHING SEASON.
JUST TERRIBLE. YOU DO NOTHING TOO STOP THEM BY THE WAY.

I have just completed your survey concerning docks on public waters. The instructions stated that we needed to use the 8 digit registration number. As my canoe has a six digit number , I hope my comments will be included in the survey.
Please publicize this survey so that you get comments from a wide array of Minnesotans.
Thanks for doing this survey.
