Small Arkansas River Fish Kill Found Near Ozark
OZARK – Another freshwater drum kill has been reported on the Arkansas River near Ozark Lock and Dam. The most recent fish kill was reported Jan. 28. Unlike the previous kill Dec. 29, where more than 83,000 dead and dying fish were spotted on the surface of the river, this kill amounted to fewer than 500 fish.
After numerous tests were performed on fish from the December kill, no cause of death could be found. Although the recent fish kill was much smaller, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Assistant Chief of Fisheries Chris Racey said the agency is conducting further testing on fish from the latest kill to determine the cause.
“We are again asking the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to perform additional testing on the fish we were able to capture,” Racey said.
Histology and bacterial culture results should be available by the end of the week.
