MDC invites new youth turkey hunters to a free clinic in Columbia and an opportunity to participate in a mentored hunt in April. First-time turkey hunters age 10 – 15 can register until March 27.

The clinic, designed for first-time turkey hunters ages 10 – 15 years, will teach turkey hunting basics, such as:

  • Turkey hunting safety,
  • Use of camouflage,
  • How to select the best ammunition and shotgun for turkey hunting,
  • How to properly pattern a shotgun,
  • How to improve hunting and shooting skills, and
  • How to call turkeys and use decoys.

“Especially for first time hunters, turkeys can be tricky,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Brian Flowers. “These clinics provide youth an opportunity to learn how to set-up properly, use a call effectively, and discover the joys of turkey hunting.”

All participants must be accompanied at the clinic by a parent or adult mentor, age 18 years or older.  Participation in the mentored hunt is limited to first-time youth turkey hunters, ages 10-15, who have never purchased a turkey hunting permit.

Space in the clinic is limited, and attendees must pre-register by March 27 by contacting Brian Flowers at brian [dot] flowers [at] mdc [dot] mo [dot] gov(link sends e-mail) or (573)815-7901, ext. 2867.
