Look no further than your nearest park or natural area.

“Numerous studies conclude that time spent in outdoor settings decreases stress, inspires creativity, promotes social development, and encourages physical fitness,” said National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis. “A new partnership among the National Park Service, the National Association of State Park Directors, and the National Recreation and Park Association was recently formed to develop and promote programs and policies in parks and other areas that connect children with nature.”

The partnership’s website, www.nps.gov/ChildrenInNature/BestPractices, contains a searchable database of approximately 450 outdoor activities compiled from hundreds of national, state, and local parks and program offices.

“This easy-to-use website contains an extensive list of programs about a wide variety of subjects including archeology, art, prairies, pioneers, critters, and camping,” said Joe Elton, President of the National Association of State Park Directors. “Nature is an amazing classroom, and these creative programs make it fun for children to learn about and connect with the world around them.”

“The way children understand and experience their natural world has changed radically over the past several decades,” said Lois Finkelman, chair of the National Recreation and Park Association Board of Trustees. “Our three groups will work together to expand recreational opportunities and natural resource education for children and families. In addition, we hope to engage other federal, state, local, tribal, and non-government partners in the effort.”

Leaders of the three conservation organizations signed a partnership declaration which contains an action plan to increase public awareness of local and national natural resources.

PRESIDIO, Texas — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department hopes the third time will be the charm for a daylong Fiesta set for Saturday, Nov. 14, to celebrate expanded recreational opportunities at Texas’ largest and wildest state park — Big Bend Ranch State Park.

The public is invited to learn first-hand about the many wonders of the more than 310,000-acre state park tucked into the far southwestern corner of the state during a free, daylong Fiesta at the park’s Sauceda Ranger Station. Two previous attempts to hold the outdoor celebration had to be cancelled when the Rio Grande uncharacteristically flooded the Presidio area in fall of 2008 and again in May of this year when nearby Mexico suffered an outbreak of the swine flu.

Saturday’s “open house” will feature a free barbecue lunch at noon, followed by a performance by cowboy singer-songwriter Dennis Jay. Activities being offered include park tours, hikes, guided mountain bike and horseback rides, desert survival and camping demonstrations, a student art show, Buffalo Soldiers encampment and informational displays on everything from bats to river recreation. One guided tour will go into part of the recently acquired Fresno Ranch, a significant and strategic 7,000-acre addition to the park featuring wild canyons, stunning vistas, historical roads, rich riparian habitat and Rio Grande frontage.

Park rangers, as well as natural and cultural resource specialists, will be on hand to share information about this true wilderness park in the Big Bend Country’s scenic Chihuahuan Desert highlands.

The purpose of the Fiesta is to increase awareness of the state park’s greatly expanded public use opportunities and to provide Texans, especially local citizens, a chance to visit and experience one of the great parks of the West.

Thanks to the labors of park staff and friends during the past two years, today’s adventurers now have more opportunities to hike, bike and ride horses along many miles of newly accessible trails and jeep roads, and much greater access to more than 50 new campsites, many of them in the more rugged, remote and scenic areas of Big Bend Ranch’s backcountry.

Information booths will be open and special Fiesta programs running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Special pre- and post-Fiesta tours, as well as “early bird” tours beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, will be offered by advanced reservation. The regular $3 park entry fee for persons 13 and older will be waived Thursday, Nov. 12 through Sunday, Nov. 15.

Visitors attending Fiesta weekend can make arrangements to stay overnight, but should be aware that there are limited tent camping options. Camping is free during the Nov. 12-15 time frame, but reservations are required. No lodging will be available at Sauceda.

To reserve a campsite during Fiesta weekend, call Big Bend Ranch State Park at (432) 358-4444. To reserve a spot on one of the Fiesta event tours, call TPWD’s Customer Service Center in Austin at (512) 389-8908 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. To learn more about the state park and Fiesta activities online, visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Web site.

50 DOI Sites Selected for the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program

WASHINGTON, DC — Hot Springs, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon National Parks will be the first sites commemorated in a new quarter-dollar program announced today by the U.S. Mint.

Starting in April of 2010, the America the Beautiful Quarters Program will begin producing quarters with reverse (tails side) designs showcasing a national park or other federally preserved area from each state, U.S. territory, and the District of Columbia.

“The new quarter program recognizes that public places of inspiration and recreation have always been important to Americans,” said Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. “The quarters highlight the diversity and magnificence of 48 National Park Service sites and two U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refuges cared for by the Department of the Interior as well as six national forests administered by the Department of Agriculture. Hopefully the coins will encourage people to learn more about each area and its significance to our heritage.”

A new quarter will be introduced approximately every 10 weeks for eleven years. The 56 coins will be issued sequentially in the order in which the featured location was first placed under the care of the federal government.

The first, Hot Springs National Park, was established as Hot Springs Reservation in 1832 and later became a national park. Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872, followed by Yosemite in 1890 and the Grand Canyon in 1893.

Congress authorized the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 to celebrate the nation’s legacy of conservation. The legislation recalls noteworthy steps in the nation’s preservation movement and quotes Theodore Roosevelt who said that nothing short of defending this country in wartime “compares in importance with the great central task of leaving this land even a better land for our descendents than it is for us.”

Salazar and the United States Mint selected the places based on recommendations from the governor or chief executive of each jurisdiction. Secretary of the Treasury Timothy F. Geithner approved the list on August 25, 2009.

In addition to the coins for circulation, the Mint will produce collectable items including proof sets, silver proof sets, a five ounce silver bullion coin, coin bags, and coin rolls for each quarter. For more information about the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, please visit www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/NSQuartersProgram/index.cfm.

Virtual tours of Itasca, Jay Cooke, Minneopa and Soudan Underground Mine state parks were created this summer as a pilot project. They can be viewed by clicking the virtual tours link at http://www.mnstateparks.info/

The pilot project resulted from research showing the “Next Generation” (under age 50) would find virtual tours helpful for trip planning. The Soudan Underground Mine virtual tour is a YouTube-style video. The other three feature panoramic photos. All four virtual tours include an accessible version for Web site visitors with visual disabilities or low-speed Internet connections.

The DNR is seeking feedback about the first four virtual tours, including what style of virtual tour is most popular. Based on the comments and suggestions received from a brief online survey at the above Web site, the DNR will create additional virtual tours over the next couple of years. Dozens of Minnesota state parks, state recreation areas and state trails are expected to be featured in virtual tours by the end of June 2010.

The American people have created 391 national parks and entrusted their care to the National Park Service. With the help of volunteers and park partners, we are proud to preserve these places and to share their stories with more than 275 million visitors every year,” said Dan Wenk, Acting Director of the National Park Service.

“We hope everyone will come out and join us on September 26 to celebrate the parks and our shared commitment to make America’s Best Idea even better.” “This will be a memorable day for Americans everywhere to volunteer and participate in the vitality and preservation of our national parks, and to be one of the first to get a glimpse at this historic film,” said Neil Mulholland, president and CEO of the National Park Foundation, a core partner and funder of The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.

“This day and Ken Burns’s film are powerful invitations to all Americans to reconnect to our national parks, to share their legacy, and to join us in helping fulfill their most critical needs.”

Some park events include:

National Mall and Memorial Parks (DC/MD/VA) – The 13 national parks of the National Capital Region will each host their own volunteer and special interpretive activities for the community throughout the day. Service projects will vary by site and include trail projects, river clean-ups and exotic plant removal. The service day will conclude with a celebration on the Ellipse from 5-8:30pm featuring fun activities, music, giveaways and a special preview screening of the The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. The program will include remarks by Ken Burns and other special guests.

Minute Man National Historical Park (MA) – Minute Man will be celebrating its 50th anniversary as a national park on September 26. Volunteers will staff the day-long celebration from 10am-4pm, and will host demonstrations of 18th-century activities including leatherworking, music, and agricultural. Recently rehabilitated structures along Battle Road will be open to the public – many for the first time.

Rocky Mountain National Park (CO) – Volunteers will build a new trail along the Continental Divide in the western side of the park. Throughout the day and across the park, a special sneak peak of The National Parks: America’s Best Idea will be viewed. Beginning at 6pm, Rocky Mountain PBS and Etown.org will celebrate Ken Burns and his new documentary at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder. Local musicians will play music from the film and a special preview screening will be offered.

Valley Forge National Historical Park (PA) – More than 200 volunteers will spend the day building trails, painting cannon, removing crayfish – an invasive species – from the river. The park will also host an environmental expo engaging people in green community activities and businesses.

A full listing of park events – updated daily – is online at www.nps.gov/september26.

National Park Foundation supporters including long-time proud partner Unilever, as well as Merrell are helping to sponsor the national celebration as well as host complementary events in cities across the country.

About the National Park Foundation
The National Park Foundation is an independent charitable organization chartered by Congress in 1967 to strengthen the connection between the American people and their national parks. As the official national non-profit partner of America’s National Parks, the Foundation raises private funds, makes strategic grants, creates innovative partnerships and increases public awareness about the need and opportunity for park philanthropy. Unwind by skipping rocks and rolling through the countryside by bike or train at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, just a short drive from Cleveland and Akron. It’s a great place to enjoy the waning days of summer before they pass you by.

Get outdoors and walk or bike the park’s 100 miles of trails. You can even bike to one end of the historic towpath and catch the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad back for just $2 on the Bike Aboard! service. Not only does the Cuyahoga Valley offer beautiful landscapes, it is packed with history. In fact, your train operates on tracks that date to 1880, so you can ride back in time. Stop by a visitor center or ask a National Park Service ranger to learn more about Cuyahoga Valley’s contribution to the industrial revolution in the United States.

You can trek out on your own with the Voices of the Valley audio tour, activated by GPS technology, which will guide you and provide interesting tidbits as you make your way through the trails. Be sure to witness the beauty of the Brandywine Falls – the 65-foot waterfall is one of the park’s most stunning displays of nature. To experience all that the Cuyahoga Valley has to offer, see it for yourself.

Each week, www.nps.gov/getaways features one of the almost 400 national parks to help people find new places to reconnect with nature, history, family, and friends. Previous getaways include Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Boston National Historical Park, North Cascades National Park, Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, and Prince William Forest Park.

Mark your calendars: The weekend of August 15-16 is this summer’s last entrance fee-free weekend at national parks across the country. It’s the perfect chance to visit an old favorite or discover someplace new.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), through the Explore the Outdoors program, is providing parents and children with a variety of family-oriented events to help Ohioans jumpstart healthy outdoor lifestyles.

Explore the Outdoors is an exciting, hands-on family program that gives Ohio children the opportunity to reunite with nature, improve their physical and emotional health and discover the rewards of becoming environmental stewards. Through the program, ODNR provides Ohio parents, grade school teachers, youth leaders and outdoor educators with an easy activity guide to lead Ohio’s young people into the outdoors and an interactive online resource, www.exploretheoutdoorsohio.com, which families can use to find exciting outdoor events.

In July, which is National Park and Recreation Month, special Explore the Outdoors events will continue to be posted on the Explore the Outdoors web site. Upcoming events (through July 12) are listed here:

The program’s activity guide recommends fun outdoor activities, including Spot a Bird, Hike a Trail or Camp Under the Stars. Families can accomplish all of the activities noted in the book at state parks, forests, preserves and wildlife areas throughout Ohio. Families can also complete some of the activities at local parks, green spaces or even at home.

Explore the Outdoors participants can find special activity completion codes posted at welcome centers and kiosks in participating ODNR and partner facilities statewide. Children who enter at least two codes on the Explore the Outdoors web site will receive a printable certificate signed by Gov. Ted Strickland. Participants can also get entered for other prizes, including a GreenBird birdhouse and a state park camping excursion.

Parents and teachers can contact 614-784-PLAY (7529) or explore [at] dnr [dot] state [dot] oh [dot] us for additional information or to request activity guides and program resources.
No worries – national parks can shake the squirmies.

A new web feature, www.nps.gov/getaways, launching today, will highlight one, of the almost 400 national parks, every week this summer to help families find places to run off that extra energy or just relax and enjoy some fresh air. Of course, national parks are also great places to learn and keep the brain energized over the summer too (but don’t tell the kids!).

The first park in the series is Prince William Forest Park (www.nps.gov/prwi) in Triangle, Virginia. Just a stone’s throw outside of Washington, DC, this gem is full of history and hiking trails, wildlife and solitude. Visit this weekend and pay no entrance fee. The park is planning special kids crafts, tours, talks, and hikes to celebrate!

This weekend, June 20-21, is also the first of three weekends that the National Park Service is waiving entrance fees nationwide. And it’s Father’s Day, so grab a dad, and friends and family, to make some memories. There will be no entrance fees, commercial tour fees or transportation entrance fees at national parks this weekend, July 18-19 and August 15-16. Park partners, including tour operators and vendors, are joining in, too, by offering special discounts and promotions.

For more information on fee free weekends visit: http://www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm

The coupon book includes discounts on items from grocers, restaurants, automotive repair facilities, gift shops, gas and convenience stores, hair and beauty salons, pharmacies, fitness and health centers, hardware stores, lodging, entertainment and much more.

“We just recently started this promotion and have already distributed many discount books,” said DNR Park Supervisor Dan Dowdy. “The campers are excited and already using their coupons at local businesses, and are very pleased with the free items and discounts they are receiving.”

Also featured in this promotion is a coupon for one free night of camping at Baraga State Park. This coupon is only redeemable in person at the park and cannot be used toward online or call center reservations. Park visitors also will receive a free “Camper’s Gift,” redeemable at the Ojibwa Casino’s guest services office with proof of camper registration from Baraga State Park.

The coupon and discount books are exclusive to Baraga State Park patrons who are registered to stay four consecutive nights or longer at the park. Park visitors can obtain their coupon books upon their arrival. Books are limited to one per “Customer ID.”

Baraga State Park staff are hoping campers will GO-Get Outdoors, make their reservations and enjoy the discounts they will receive at area businesses during their stay. Park staff also would like to thank the Baraga County businesses for their support and participation in this promotion, Dowdy said.

Baraga State Park is located at 1300 US-41 South in Baraga, one-half mile south of US-41. For more information about this promotion, the park, accessibility, or park amenities, contact the park at (906) 353-6558 (TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit www.michigan.gov/baraga.

Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling the DNR central reservation system at 800-447-2757.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.

Join the DNR in celebrating the 90th anniversary of Michigan State Parks (1919-2009) this year. Events are being posted at www.michigan.gov/dnrgogetoutdoors.

From the shores of Maine and Alaska to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to the warm beaches of California and the Virgin Islands, national parks offer something for everyone. “National Parks have been the family summer vacation of choice for generations – they offer tradition, heritage, recreation, and fun for all members of the family,” said Acting NPS Director Dan Wenk. “There are incredible opportunities for you to experience the marvelous natural and cultural heritage of our country and pay homage to our ancestors and inspire our children to become better stewards of the parks for tomorrow. Enjoy a ranger program, experience the beauty – and our history. I welcome you to come out and enjoy your national parks this year and every year.”

The National Park Service has developed and made available a web site to help inform visitors about what’s new in national parks this year and the many ranger led programs, activities and commercial services available. Find out what a great summer is waiting for you this year in your National Parks by visiting the “National Parks: The Place to be for Family Fun” website at: http://www.nps.gov/pub_aff/parks2009/index.htm.

The National Park Service always recommends stopping by the park’s visitor center to get the latest, most up-to-date park information. In addition, NPS reminds visitors that safety is critical, and hikers should stay on marked trails and let family members and/or friends know their whereabouts. Remember to dress appropriately for the elements and activities you are going to engage in, and it’s always best to have plenty of water on hand. Parks Rangers are easily recognizable in their distinctive green and gray uniforms and ranger hats. Ask questions…that’s what they are there for!

“Our State Parks are host to some of the most magnificent natural sights and wildlife,” said Governor O’Malley. “This summer, I encourage Maryland families to take advantage of this opportunity to spend time with their family in our beautiful outdoor destinations.”

Park Quest is a free 11-week competition, beginning on May 9 and continuing through July 26, which challenges families to complete designated outdoor activities and challenges at 14 specific state parks throughout Maryland. Participants who complete 8 of the 14 challenge activities will qualify to compete in the Park Quest Finale on August 8, 2009 at Tuckahoe State Park.

“Maryland State Parks and our Park Quest adventures offer every citizen, young or old, the opportunity to connect with our natural world,” said DNR Secretary John Griffin. “Research has shown time and again that children that spend time outdoors become better students, better citizens and ultimately better stewards of our environment.”

Up to 300 teams, made up of at least one team member 16 years of age or younger and one adult, may visit 14 Maryland State Parks and take part in a variety of activities. Upon completing assigned activities, such as paddling quiet streams, hiking trails in search of historic clues, finding items on a scavenger hunt, and even disc golf, the team will receive a stamp on their Park Quest passport.

At the conclusion of the 11-week period, teams that have at least 8 completed Park Quests logged in their Passport will be invited to attend The Park Quest Finale. At the Finale, teams compete in games of chance, environmental knowledge and outdoor skills for the opportunity to win one of several great family prize packages. Prizes at the final competition are made possible by many private and corporate sponsors.

Interested Park Quest participants must register online at www.dnr.maryland.gov/parkquest or by contacting the Maryland Park Service at 410-260-8186 or toll-free at 1-800-830-3974, Monday through Friday.

To help ensure that all Maryland children have an opportunity to experience and connect with nature, last spring Governor Martin O’Malley established Maryland’s Partnership for Children in Nature, a coalition of state, local, private and non-profit partners charged with promoting the well-being of youth by accelerating environmental learning, connecting communities to parks and public lands and expanding opportunities for structured and unstructured outdoor time in nature for both play and learning. The Partnership’s initial report is expected to be presented to the Governor in April.

Up to 1.5 km of groomed ski trails will be lit with candle luminaries for the event. There will be a trail stop midway, where skiers can gather around a campfire and warm up with a cup of hot cider or cocoa.

“The trails are relatively easy and suited to skiers of all ages and abilities,” said Dean Holm, assistant park manager. “Guests are welcome to ski the trails at their leisure and take in the beauty of the snow-covered lake and pines.”

Guests should bring their cross-country skis and meet by the park’s beach picnic shelter. There is no charge for the event, however a vehicle permit is required to enter the park, and the Great MN Ski Pass is required for skiers 16 years or older. The daily vehicle permit and ski pass are both available at the park for $5 each.

Hayes Lake State Park is 15 miles south of Roseau on State Highway 89, then nine miles east on Roseau County Road 4.
