Agencies to Sample Creeks in Continued Search for Northern Snakehead

LITTLE ROCK – Several state and federal agencies will be sampling Big Creek and Cox Cypress Creek in eastern Arkansas next week as part of the continuing effort to discover the extent of the northern snakehead infestation.
Fisheries biologists from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, along with representatives from the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, United States Geological Survey, University of Central Arkansas and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, will be sampling the Big Creek and Cox Cypress Creek drainages in Lee and Monroe Counties beginning June 9.
Sampling is being conducted in light of the recent discovery of the northern snakehead in Piney Creek near Monroe, according to AGFC fisheries biologist Lee Holt. “This is an effort to determine how widely distributed this invasive species has become. Agency officials will be contacting landowners and farmers to request permission to conduct sampling on the properties of interest,” Holt said.
