Chiloquin Student Wins the Oregon 2003 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Competition

Richard Mark, 14, a student attending Chiloquin Jr./Sr. High School, won Best of Show in Oregon for the 2003 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest.  His colored pencil drawing of a pair of wood ducks at a nest box will represent Oregon in the 2003 National Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest to be held in Ocean City, MD on April 26, 2003.

His winning artwork was submitted with the support of his 9th grade teacher, Bonita Fillmore.  Ms. Fillmore encouraged Richard to enter the Junior Duck Stamp Competition after seeing his 2nd Place winning design from the 2002 Tule Lake Fair.

The 1st place winner of the National competition will have his or her artwork portrayed on the Junior Duck Stamp and will be awarded a $4,000 cash award and a free trip to Washington, DC in the fall to attend the Federal Duck Stamp Contest.  The 2nd place winner receives a $2,000 cash award; and the 3rd place winner receives a $1,000 cash award.

A five-judge panel selected Mark’s entry from 581 entries submitted from 21 counties throughout Oregon.  The judging for the Oregon competition was held at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Regional Office in Portland.  The judges for this year’s competition were Mark Nebeker, Sauvie Island Wildlife Area Manager, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife; Darlene Betat, Events Manager, Audubon Society of Portland; Bill Monroe, Outdoor Writer, Oregonian; Mary Anne Sohlstrom, President of the Oregon Field Ornithologists and Office Manager for The Wetlands Conservancy; and Ram Papish, Biological Science Technician, US Fish & Wildlife Service, Newport.  The coordinator for the Oregon competition is Pam Johnson, Administrative Officer for the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Newport.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program is a nationwide competition, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, that integrates art and science in a curriculum that fosters student awareness and appreciation of waterfowl and wetlands through artistic talent.  Public, private, and home school students from kindergarten through twelfth grade are encouraged to compete in this unique conservation through the arts program.

Junior Duck Stamps can be purchased for $5.00 by calling the Federal Duck Stamp Office at (877) 887-5508.  Proceeds from the sales of Junior Duck Stamps support conservation education awareness and awards.
