Terry Andrae State Park celebrates 75th anniversary Sept. 7SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- Visitors to Kohler-Andrae State Park will be able to take a step back in time on Sunday, Sept. 7take a step back in time at when the park will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Terry Andrae State Park. Terry Andrae State Park was created in 1928 through the generous gift of a 122 acres of property located just south of the city of Sheboygan along the shores of Lake Michigan by Mrs. Elsbeth Andrae of Milwaukee. Andrae donated her sand dune estate to the State of Wisconsin for the purpose of creating a state park in memory of her late husband Terry Andrae, a well-known Milwaukee industrialist of the time. Terry Andrae State Park and its adjoining sister park to the north, John Michael Kohler State Park, are administered together as one unit, the Kohler-Andrae State Park. Since 1927, the parks has grown considerably, and currently encompasses 1,000 acres and has over 2 miles of wide sandy Lake Michigan beach. Kohler-Andrae has also grown in popularity over the years as well. The park is now one of the busiest parks in the state with over 350,000 visitors and 60,000 campers using the park each year. While the sand dunes and beach area are prime summer attractions, the park also has four trails, including one unique Cordwalk Trail build boards and rope that takes hikers through the dunes with three lookout points and benches overlooking Lake Michigan and another open to horseback riding and mountain biking. There are 105 family campsites at the park, and two group camps. Campground facilities include flush toilets and showers. There are several picnic areas throughout the park, along with a children’s play area. There is a concession stand and bathhouse in the beach area that are open during the summer. Another prime feature of the park is the Sanderling Nature Center, with a 100-seat auditorium and a variety of wildlife and nature exhibits and interpretive programs. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Terry Andrae State Park, the park is offering free admission all day Sunday, Sept. 7. In addition, many activities and 1920s style entertainment will be offered throughout the day, both at the park’s nature center and picnic areas. Scheduled events include:
