Meetings set to seek public views on razor clam seasons

OLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is holding five public meetings this month to seek public comments on the structure of upcoming tentative 2003-04 razor clam seasons.

Unlike past years, however, the department is not able to announce tentative clam harvest dates prior to the meetings. That's because high domoic acid levels may continue to delay clam harvest seasons. Excessively high levels of domoic acid, which can cause illness or death in humans who consume shellfish from affected areas, led to cancellation of all razor clam harvests since October 2002.

The public meetings will take place at the following dates and locations:

bulletFife: Monday, Sept. 8, at Fife High School in the school administration building, 5802 20th St. E. (off Interstate 5).
bulletLongbeach: Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Super 8 Motel, 500 Ocean Beach Blvd.
bulletForks: Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the West End Sportsman's Club, 243 Sportsman's Drive. The Forks meeting is being held in conjunction with staff from the Olympic National Park.
bulletOcean Shores: Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Shilo Inn (Dolphin Room), 707 Ocean Shores Blvd. N.W.
bulletWestport: Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Ocosta High School Library, 2580 Montesano St.

All meetings are scheduled to start at 7:00 pm., except for the meeting in Forks, which will start at 7:30 p.m.

People who are unable to attend the public meetings can submit written comments to WDFW through Sept. 19. Comments should be mailed to Dan Ayres, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA 98501-1091 or sent via email to fishpgm@dfw.wa.gov to the attention of Dan Ayres.
