Maryland Natural Resources Investigate Boating Accident Of Covington Woman
Seek Public's Help

SOLOMONS ISLAND, MD (September 2, 2003) — Maryland Natural Resources Police are investigating a boating incident and seeking help from potential witnesses to a fatal boating accident Monday.

Mary Jane Mitchell, 50, from Covington, Virginia, fell off her 30-foot boat into the Patuxent River near Solomons Island, near to Buoy 6A between 1:20 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

A Tow Boat operator rescued Mitchell at approximately 1:30 p.m. She was stabilized by Solomons Rescue Squad and flown to Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C. for treatment, however she later died.

Her husband was with her at the time of the incident. The unnamed vessel has a blue-hull with maroon sail covers and is stored at Calvert Marina. She was not wearing personal flotation device (PFD). The body will be taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for autopsy. If anyone witnessed the incident, they should contact Natural Resources Police Cpl.
