Culbertson Mansion seeks frightening artists

New Albany, Ind. Do you have a haunted easel or eerie paints? Is your art work scary?

The Culbertson Mansion state historic site is seeking artists young and old to participate in its haunted house art contest.

Contestants are required to create a picture using a haunted house theme. The picture does not need to be of the Culbertson Mansion, but must be the exterior or interior of an old home.

Judging will be based on originality, technique and eye-catching appeal. Awards will be presented in each of the following categories:

Grades K-3 $15
4-6 $25
7-9 $50
10-Adult $100

One picture will be selected as the overall winner and could be adapted for use as a poster for the Culbertson Mansion 2003 haunted house promotion.

Winners will be announced Sunday, October 12 at the New Albany Harvest Homecoming Festival and contest officials will notify the winners by telephone on Tuesday, October 14.

Entries must be mailed to or dropped off at the Culbertson Mansion state historic site, 914 E. Main Street, New Albany, IN 47150. The deadline for submission is Friday, September 19 at 5 p.m. (EDST). All entries must be either 8x11 or 8x14 inch format. Pictures can be painted, sketched, colored, chalked, or completed in any other medium.

Employees of Culbertson Mansion state historic site and members of the Friends of Culbertson Mansion, Inc are not eligible to enter.

Friends of the Culbertson Mansion will not be responsible for returning entries. Entries may be picked up Nov. 1 through Nov. 25 at the mansion. Those remaining will become the property of the Friends of the Culbertson Mansion.

The Culbertson Mansion state historic site is part of the Department of Natural Resources Division of State Museums and Historic Sites with 14 sites throughout the state. The mansion is located at 914 E. Main St. in downtown New Albany. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Donations are encouraged.
