The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission ratified a rule implementing a set of "rules of the road" for vessels on Louisiana state waters. The commission voted unanimously at their September 4 meeting.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Clark spoke briefly before the commission to urge them to ratify the proposal. He said that two- boat accidents were the fastest rising type of accidents in the country. This set of rules will help to better control boating practices. Lt. Col. Clark presented the proposal to the commission at their May 1 meeting.

The adopted "rules of the road" is a set of 20 rules. These rules follow current U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Enforcement agents will now be allowed to prove criminal intent in the event of an accident and file criminal charges for negligence. It is hoped that this provides a deterrent to reckless boat usage and reminds boaters to be safe at all times.

Attached is a listing of the rules. They may also be found on the LDWF website at: Future publications regarding Louisiana boating safety and practices will include these rules.
