Montana's set aside a full weekend this year just for young duck hunters.

The state's "Special Statewide Youth Waterfowl Hunting Weekend" is set for Sept 27-28.  The regular duck season opens on Oct. 4 statewide.

Legally licensed hunters ages 12 through 15 may hunt ducks, geese, coots and mergansers on the special weekend, but must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age, who cannot hunt on this day.

The bag limits, shooting hours, and all other regulations that apply to the regular duck season apply to this special hunt. The youth waterfowl hunt at Canyon Ferry Reservoir near Helena, however, ends each day at noon. While the accompanying adult may not shoot ducks, he or she can assist with setting decoys, calling and retrieving.

"The best thing about this special weekend is that the weather is usually great and the young hunter is the focus of attention," said Gary Hammond, FWP's wildlife management bureau chief in Helena. "There's less competition and it's a great way to introduce a youngster to this life-long outdoor pursuit."

Hammond encouraged all hunters to take advantage of this opportunity by taking a youngster, be it their own or perhaps a neighbor who has no one to take him or her, out hunting. "It's a great opportunity for young people and for adults," he said
