EVACUATING ALL STATE FORESTS AND PARKS CAMPGROUNDS, PLANNED CLOSURES ON
ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 17,
2003) - Upon the recommendation of Marylandís Director of Homeland
Security and the Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR),
Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. today directed DNRís State Forest & Park
Service to evacuate campers from all DNR-owned lands, including all
state forests and parks, and to close these areas Thursday and Friday.
The decision was made in preparation for Hurricane Isabel.
All DNR owned and managed lands are closed to public access for
any reason effective immediately. Existing reservations for hunting
public lands on Thursday and Friday are cancelled.
Maryland has 48 state parks, 6 state forests, 33 wildlife management
areas, two natural environment areas and four natural resource
management areas. The evacuation and closures also affect Chesapeake
Forest lands on the Eastern Shore. A decision to potentially open all
DNR owned and managed lands will be made pending storm damage
