Outdoor California Magazine's latest issue kicks off with a search for a killer. Since the mid-1970s, mysterious oil spills have appeared in winter. With the turn of the millennium, oil from an unknown source again killed thousands of birds annually from north of the San Francisco Bay to Monterey. The Department of Fish and Game's (DFG) Office of Spill Prevention and Response decided it was time to find the problem and fix it.

Follow the amazing science, new technologies, and cooperation between agencies in a story that follows pollution sleuths as they solve the mystery and eliminate the problem.

Outdoor California offers great news for the adventurous angler. Trinity Lake bass populations are up, and it's not just the anglers who are in on the fun. For those more drawn to the challenge of pitting themselves against the elements, the latest issue also tags along with a novice abalone diver.

DFG's Outdoor California is published bi-monthly and regularly presents unique articles on the status of ongoing efforts to protect, enhance and restore California's fish, wildlife and the habitat upon which they depend.

DFG has been printing Outdoor California - one of a very few subscription-based publications produced by a state agency in California - since 1953, and it is funded almost exclusively by subscriptions with minimal advertising. Limited supplies of single issues are available for public browsing at DFG offices around the state. Outdoor California is available by mail subscription normally $12 for one year, but through a special offer, the magazine is just $9.95. Call (916) 653-6420 for more information on subscriptions.

As a special offer, anyone purchasing a subscription can request a copy of the last issue which features a trout fishing guide for the entire state - absolutely free while supplies last. With maps, directions, phone numbers and amenities, the trout fishing guide issue is one no angler should be without.

SPECIAL NOTE: A single complimentary copy of the magazine will be provided to members of the media. Members of the media may also request a 2003 calendar poster, please note choice of either eagle or seal center picture. Call (916) 653-6420 or e-mail

Special access can be arranged to images whose copyright is held by the DFG. Email for more information.
