Communities receive funds for boating projects

MADISON –Three Wisconsin units of government and five lake protection and rehabilitation districts will receive grants totaling $214,207 to make improvements for recreational boating in their communities.

The grants were approved at the August meeting of the Wisconsin Waterways Commission, a five-member commission appointed by the governor to determine the need for recreational boating facilities and to approve financial aid to local governments and agencies for the development of recreational boating projects. Funds for grants comes from the state Water Resources Account and are raised through a formula transfer of excise tax on gasoline used for marine purposes.

Units of government and qualified lake associations interested in applying for matching funds for recreational boating projects should contact the community services specialist at their regional Department of Natural Resources office. Eligible sponsors also include town sanitary districts and other local governmental units established for the purposes of lake management.

The commission approved the following list of eight new projects:

bulletCatfish Lake Association, Vilas County: $12,500 to chemically treat 50 acres of Eurasian water milfoil on Catfish Lake.

 

bulletVillage Of Ferryville, Crawford County: an amendment of $33,709 to an existing project to renovate launching facilities to the Mississippi River at Ferryville.

 

bulletLittle Green Lake Protection & Rehabilitation District, Green Lake County: $55,360 to acquire a weed harvester and trailer/conveyor for use on Little Green Lake.

 

bulletLittle Green Lake Protection & Rehabilitation District, Green Lake County: $10,000 to chemically treat 50 acres of Eurasian water milfoil on Little Green Lake.

 

bulletTown Of Delton, Sauk County; $14,669 to improve the launching facility at the Town access to Mirror Lake. Improvements include the grading and paving of the parking area and approach, placement of an accessible boarding dock an installation of a chemical toilet.

 

bulletShawano Lake Property Owner’s Association, Shawano County; $17,000 to chemically treat 33 acres of Eurasian water milfoil on Shawano Lake.

 

bulletLegend Lake Protection & Rehabilitation District, Menominee County; $11,500 to chemically treat 150 acres of Eurasian water milfoil on Legend Lake.

 

bulletMilwaukee County: $60,469 to improve disable access to the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center. Improvements will include the installation of a new dock ramp and dock and a lift transfer station.

The next meeting of the Commission is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 22. Sponsors interested in making application should get in contact with regional community service specialist in their area. Projects cannot be forwarded to the Commission for consideration until all appropriate water regulatory permits or weed harvesting/chemical permits are obtained by the sponsor.
