New Bird Checklist for North, Central Texas Available

AUSTIN, Texas - A new publication by Texas Partners in Flight and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has just been released. Itís called, Birds of the Oaks and Prairies and Osage Plains of Texas: A Field Checklist and is by Brush Freeman. Freeman is a longtime Texas birdwatcher and author who resides west of Bastrop.

The new 16-page booklet covers the combined Blackland Prairies, Post Oak Savannahs, and Cross Timbers ecological zones in Texas. To see a map of this giant coverage area, see the Texas portions of Physiographic Areas 08 and 33 on the Partners in Flight Web site at ( The new checklist includes a species list of 471 birds and monthly abundance codes.

The authors note that this is a checklist and does not include pictures of birds or places to go birding, but is an excellent reference piece nonetheless.

Anyone can get a free copy by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope with two first-class stamps on it to Cliff Shackelford, Oaks and Prairies Checklist, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, 3000 IH-35 South, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78704. This must be a 6"x 9" envelope for the booklet to fitónothing smaller or larger.

The free offer expires Oct. 15, after which a $1 donation check made out to the TPWD Nongame Fund will need to be included with the envelope as described above.

"The $1 donations will enable us to reprint when the checklist is out-of-stock," Shackelford said. "This will help us maintain our outreach and education efforts."
