Governor's Youth Wild Turkey & Bass Challenge Event Big Success

 

Successful youth hunter Lace Shaw of Ridgeley and her guide,   Ten youth winners of an essay contest enjoyed two days afield and learned about the importance of wildlife management during the forth annual Governor's Youth Wild Turkey & Bass Challenge event, held May 13 – 15 at Flatwoods in Braxton County and Stonewall Jackson Lake Resort State Park in Lewis County, according to Ed Hamrick, Director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. The Governor's Youth Wild Turkey & Bass Challenge is a major activity in Governor Bob Wise's Youth in the Outdoors Program, which includes several outdoor sporting and educational events each year.

 

  The 10 winners, ranging in age from 10 to 16, were chosen from among 160 entrants in an essay contest with the theme ” What can I, as an individual, do to protect my hunting and fishing heritage?” The winners of the essay contest were:

 

•  Russell James, age 10, Wellsburg, Brooke County

•  Jacob Kissella, age 14, Lumberport, Harrison County

•  Gregory Jarvis, age 16, Barrackville, Marion County

•  Lace Shaw, age 14, Ridgeley, Mineral County

•  Lindsey Propst, age 13, Franklin , Pendleton County

•  Hanna Weaver, age 13, Frankin, Pendleton County

•  Sarah Dunaway, age 11, Thornton , Taylor County

•  Daniel Helmick, age 14, Buckhannon, Upshur County

•  Ashley Reeves, age 13, Wayne , Wayne County

•  Katie Powell, age 13, Wood County

 

  The participants were given hands-on experience in wildlife study techniques, which included an electro-fishing and a wild turkey trapping demonstration at Stonewall Jackson Lake Resort State Park. They also participated in two mornings of guided turkey hunts in the Flatwoods area provided by members of the West Virginia Wild Turkey Federation and a guided fishing trip on Stonewall Jackson Lake provided by members of the West Virginia B.A.S.S. Federation.

 

  Two youth were successful in harvesting turkeys: Lace Shaw with her guide Scott Wilson of Clarksburg ; and Russell James with his guide Scott Gainer of Martinsburg.

 

  The Mossy Oak store in Flatwoods donated a complete camouflage hunting outfit to each participant, while the Flatwoods Days Inn donated rooms for the participants and their families.

 

  The Governor's Wild Turkey & Bass Challenge was sponsored by the DNR, the West Virginia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the West Virginia B.A.S.S. Federation, The Days Inn at Flatwoods, and Mossy Oak.
