In 2006, trout season officially begins in all waters open to public
angling on Saturday, April 8 at 8 a.m. Each spring approximately 570,000
trout are stocked in the state's public waters during. Standard
production trout average 10.5 inches but range up to 12 inches.
By opening day, approximately 181,000 trout will have been stocked in
the state's freshwater streams, lakes, ponds and impoundments. Among
those stocked pre-season are approximately 4,000 to 6,000 surplus
broodstock weighing 3 to 5 pounds each and ranging from 14 to 22 inches.
Many of these fish remain available all season, awaiting anglers.
The Division began a program in 2004 of stocking higher numbers of
broodstock in nine trout-stocked ponds and small lakes. This program
continued in 2005 in a different set of waters and in 2006 yet different
waters will receive these fish - five to ten times more broodstock than
they have traditionally received. For more information on where to find
these fish see the
Bonus Broodstock Ponds and Lakes page.
Anglers are reminded that changes in the stocking schedule begun last
year mean 70 lakes and ponds are being stocked one week earlier than in
past years, with most being restocked during Week 1.
