All Hunting Cancelled At Fort Chaffee
FORT SMITH – Officials of the Arkansas National Guard and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission met last week and decided that Fort Chaffee Wildlife Management Area will be closed to all hunting and other recreational public access through December.
The 39th Infantry Brigade of the Arkansas Army National Guard will be using Fort Chaffee for training exercises throughout the months of October, November and December as the brigade conducts intensive preparations for its deployment to Iraq in early 2008.
Fort Chaffee Training Site Management will post notices at all of the main access gates notifying the public that Fort Chaffee will be closed to all recreational public access for the period Oct. 1, 2007, through Jan. 1, 2008. This closing is in the interest of public safety due to the large numbers of troops from the 39th Infantry Brigade conducting a variety of training. The training includes live fire weapons qualifications and road movements in advance of its Iraq deployment.
For those hunters who purchased a special permit for scheduled permit deer hunts on the Fort Chaffee Wildlife Management Area, or won a permit in the AGFC's permit draw, refunds should be mailed out in coming weeks.
For questions regarding the closure, please call the Fort Chaffee Environmental Office at (479) 484-2231 or AGFC at (479) 478
