DNR Offers Kayaking Workshop for WomenThe Department of Natural Resources’ Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program today announced a kayaking workshop for women 18 and older, July 12-13, to be held at Bahnhof Sports in Petoskey.

This Beyond BOW workshop includes six hours of intensive hands-on instruction (three hours Saturday and three hours Sunday) on Mill Pond on Walloon Lake and in Little Traverse Bay. Locations may change depending on the wind and weather. Participants will meet at Bahnhof Sports to commute to the paddling site.

“This course teaches participants how to paddle the proper way to make their experience on the water safe and more enjoyable,” said Lynn Marla, DNR BOW program coordinator. “We are very pleased to have top-notch women instructors lined up for this two-day workshop.”

Participants also will have their choice of three hours of unguided biking around the Petoskey area (bikes provided by Bahnhof Sports) or a group tour to nearby Oden State Fish Hatchery with a special tour led by Hatchery Interpreter Maureen Jacobs. The new state-of-the-art fish hatchery was built in 2002, and the grounds of the renovated visitor center have been restored to serve as a scale model of a Great Lakes watershed.

The workshop fee is $250 and includes all instruction, one night’s stay at the Comfort Inn in Petoskey with continental breakfast, two catered lunches and the choice of biking or touring Oden. This workshop is limited to 16 women to allow for plenty of individual instruction. The registration form is available online at www.michigan.gov/bow.
