Montana Women KayakingWomen interested in kayaking are invited to a one-day beginners’ class sponsored by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.   The two sessions, June 28 and 29, will be held at Hyalite Reservoir, south of Bozeman in the Gallatin National Forest, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.

Kayaking is one of the fastest growing outdoor sports in the country. This course on the basics will enable participants to be confident and ready to join in the fun this summer,” said Liz Lodman, FWP coordinator of the Becoming an Outdoor Woman workshops. The kayak class is an extension of the popular BOW program.

Instructors Marc Bell and Carolyn Sime will demonstrate the basic techniques and equipment needed to kayak on lakes and other flatwater. Topics will include kayak safety and basic paddle strokes. This class does not cover whitewater kayaking.

Participants will work with a variety of stable, non-tippy kayaks including sit-on-top kayaks and sea kayaks.   Participants should be able to swim and will be required to wear their own life jacket or one will be provided. Instructors will also assist during a free paddle time in the afternoon. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

A registration fee of $20 covers the class and lunch. Space is limited. For registration information, contact Liz Lodman at: FWP, PO Box 200701, Helena MT 59620, by phone: 406-444-2615, or by email: llodman [at] mt [dot] gov .
