Contest For Free Youth Deer Hunt to Begin Aug. 13LITTLE ROCK – Beginning Aug. 13, five lucky hunters will be drawn for a special youth deer hunt in southeast Arkansas. The hunt is being sponsored by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Mack’s Prairie Wings, Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry and KARK TV.

For the next five weeks, one youth hunter will be drawn each Wednesday during “Wild Wednesday” on KARK from postcards sent to the station. The doe only hunt will be held Oct. 11-12 near DeWitt.

The hunt will be filmed and broadcast Nov. 1 on the popular outdoor show “Talkin’ Outdoors at the Corner Café.” The show airs Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. on KARK Channel 4.

Hunters must be between the ages of 7 and 15 and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with a valid hunter safety card. Only youths who have never killed a deer will be eligible. The first deer harvested will be donated to Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry.

Guides will be provided for each hunter, but they must provide their gun and ammunition. The five drawings will begin on Aug. 20 and finish on Sept. 17. Each winner will receive a hunting package courtesy of Mack’s Prairie Wings. On Sept. 24 each of the five winners will be entered in a grand prized drawing for a Mossberg .243 rifle and Bushnell Scope.

KDWP To Conduct Wingshooting Course Aug. 5, 12, 19PRATT — The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will hold a three-session clinic entitled “Beginning Wingshooting” on Aug. 5, 12, and 19 at the Pratt Gun Club. The range is located one-half mile north of Pratt Community College, just east of Highway K-61 north of Pratt.

This training is designed to build wingshooting skills from basic to intermediate ability. The first session (Aug.5) will stress gun fit, proper gun mount, target focus, and live fire at incoming and outgoing straight-away shots. The second (Aug 12) and third (Aug 19) sessions will build on the skills learned in the first session and will introduce more challenging crossing and quartering shots. Each session will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Shotguns, ammunition, targets, and eye and ear protection will be provided for a fee of $20, due at the first session. Shooters need to be available for all three sessions. There will be no refunds or pro-rated fees.

Pre-registration is required. Contact the KDWP Hunter Education office at 620-672- 5911 to register. The course will be limited to 20 shooters.

Registration Deadline Approaches for Youth Hunter Challenge

Wyoming Youth HunterCHEYENNE– Young hunters are reminded that the deadline to sign up for the Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) is June 20.  The event will take place Saturday, June 28 at the Upton Gun Club.  In previous years, YHEC has been held in September in conjunction with the Wildlife Heritage Expo in Casper.

Game and Fish hunter education coordinator Jim Dawson said the event consists of  .22 rifle, shotgun and archery shooting as well as events involving wildlife identification and hunter safety.  All participants must have completed hunter education and present their hunter education card at the event. 

The competition is divided into junior (14 years and younger before Aug. 1) and senior divisions. (15-18 years of age on or before Aug. 1) All ammunition and targets will be provided.  Entry fee is $10.

Events will begin at 7:30 a.m. on June 28 and will resume on June 29 if needed.  Youth wanting to complete the entire event on June 28 can check in and start at 7 a.m. on that day. Contact Jim Dawson (307) 777-4531 for more information.
