National Park Service Launches Discover Our Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary for Richmond, Virginia

(Washington, DC) — The National Park Service is pleased to announce the launch of a new on-line travel itinerary for Richmond, Virginia. The itinerary, which can be printed as a guide, is available at http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/travel/richmond/.

The new itinerary highlights 87 local sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers several ways to discover them. Descriptions of each place highlight its significance and include photographs and information on how to visit. Thematic essays provide context for understanding destinations in the itinerary. Maps help visitors plan what to see and do. A Learn More section includes links to additional information on cultural events and activities, other things to see and do, dining and lodging possibilities, units of the National Park System in Virginia, and a bibliography.

The Richmond itinerary is the 46th in the National Park Service’s ongoing Discover Our Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary Series. The series promotes public awareness of history and encourages visits to historic places throughout the country.

The National Park Service’s Heritage Education Services, the City of Richmond, Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources produced the itinerary in partnership with the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers.

The Richmond Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau worked with the National Park Service and the partners producing the itinerary to sponsor a launch event on Monday, April 14, 2008, with tours and a reception at the Virginia Capitol in Richmond.

Ronald C. Wilson Selected as Chief Curator and Head of the Park Museum Management Program

Washington, DC - The National Park Service (NPS) today announced the selection of Ronald C. Wilson as Chief Curator to lead the Park Museum Management Program. The Park Museum Management Program is one of five park cultural resources programs that provide national program support functions for park resources and advises the Associate Director for Cultural Resources in Washington, DC, on related policy. As Chief Curator, Mr. Wilson will provide national leadership for development and coordination of service-wide plans, policies, standards, and procedures for managing National Park Service museum collections. He will also have responsibility for overseeing technical assistance, publications and professional development pertaining to park museum collections, and the maintenance of a service-wide catalog and other statistics on the National Park Service’s more than 123 million museum items. Mr. Wilson will begin his new position on May 11, 2008.

Ron Wilson has been head of the Department of Interior’s Museum Program since 1991. In that capacity he has led museum program strategic planning efforts in ten Interior bureaus and offices and developed agency-wide museum training programs. He worked for NPS from 1991-1996, during which time the Interior Museum Program was housed within the NPS museum program. Prior to that he held management positions in several public and university museums in the southeast, midwest, and mid-Atlantic states. A strong generalist with over 30 years of professional museum experience, he holds a B.S. in Zoology and a M.S. degree in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology, both from the University of Kentucky. A national leader in museum management, he brings to the park museum management program a wealth of experience successfully building and managing a large, complex program.

“We are very pleased that Ron Wilson is returning to the Washington, D.C. office of the National Park Service,” said Janet Snyder Matthews, Associate Director, Cultural Resources. “We look forward to working with him to strengthen stewardship and access to park museum resources.”

Mr. Wilson’s formal association with the National Park Service began while he was in college at the University of Kentucky. He joined Cave Research Foundation projects in Mammoth Cave National Park, where he participated in projects involving cave archeology, biology, and Pleistocene vertebrate paleontology. He later served as president of the Foundation, coordinating Foundation research programs at Mammoth Cave, Carlsbad Caverns, Sequoia-Kings Canyon, and Lava Beds.

2009 Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest Welcomes New Sponsor-Two New Categories Will Include Students and State Parks

Do you think the photos you snap are award winning? Why not enter them in the 2009 Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest? Digital photos taken in Alabama by amateur photographers are eligible for entry into the annual contest sponsored this year by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Categories added for the 2009 contest include State Parks and Student Snapshots. Student Snapshots will consist of two divisions: Youth ages 6-12 and 13-18 while the State Parks category will include photos taken in any of Alabama’s 22 State Parks operated by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). The remaining seven categories are Birds, Mammals, Reptiles and Amphibians, Other Native Wildlife, Scenic/Pictorial, Nature-Based Activities, and Wild Flora.

We really look forward to the Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest because the number and quality of entries increases each year,” said ADCNR Information and Education Chief and Outdoor Alabama Magazine Editor Kim G. Nix. “Most of the entries are so beautiful, it’s hard to judge and pick out the winners.”

All photos must have been taken in Alabama and species must be native to the state. Photos must have been taken within the past two years and not published previously. All photos must be high quality digital images submitted on a CD-ROM accompanied by an 8×10 print of each photo. Photographers may enter up to 10 photos.

In addition to having winning entries printed in the February 2009 issue of Outdoor Alabama, prizes courtesy of Academy Sports + Outdoors will be awarded to the winners in each category. Certificates will be awarded to first, second and third place winners and honorable mentions. The deadline for entering the contest is October 31, 2008, at 5 p.m. Entries received after this time will be disqualified.
