A Nevada Ladies Day in the Outdoors

A Nevada Ladies Day in the OutdoorsThe Las Vegas chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Nevada Department of Wildlife are hosting a special outdoor event just for the ladies, and there is still room for those women with an adventurous heart. The “Women in the Outdoors” workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Spencer Kimball Boy Scout Reservation just outside of Las Vegas near Mt. Potosi.

Participants will have their choice of approximately 16 workshops taught by volunteers and staff from the Nevada Department of Wildlife, as well as talented members of the outdoor sporting community. Subjects include archery, camping, canoeing, Dutch oven cooking, fishing, introduction to hunting, shotgun shooting, wildlife identification and more. In addition, there will be a silent auction and raffle for some great outdoor gifts.

Information on the Women’s Surf Fishing Clinic the Day Before the Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament is Now Available

Island Beach State Park, Seaside Park, NJ

Surf Fishing Clinic - (No surf fishing experience needed.) Open to women only at least 18 years old. Participants will learn the basics of surf fishing, including information on rods, reels, weights, line, tackle, knots, bait, fish identification, casting, reading the surf, and caring for your catch. The afternoon will be spent on the beach using techniques learned to fish the surf. The workshop will take place rain or shine, warm or cold. Participants should be prepared with appropriate clothing, as well as other convenience items such as sun screen, sunglasses, hat, and foul weather gear.

Please enclose a check for $15.00 made out to the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife with your registration form. This fee will be refunded to you at the class but will be nonrefundable for those not attending. Participants will also be able to register for the Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament held the following day, October 5. The cost for the tournament is $10 for adults, equipment will be supplied to those who participate in the workshop, but participants will be responsible for their own bait.

Women Only Hunting, Fishing Clinic July 12-13

Janice O'Shea and her 29" Rainbow Trout.Women who are interested in learning about hunting, fishing and general outdoor skills are invited to a free weekend “Cast and Blast” clinic sponsored by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, July 12-13 at the Lone Cone/Jim Olterman State Wildlife Area.
 
“This is a great opportunity for women who would like to learn about hunting and fishing or who would like to gain more outdoors skills experience,” said Leigh Gillette, the DOW’s southwest region education coordinator. “You don’t need to have any outdoor experience for this program. Women can learn some new skills in a very supportive atmosphere.”
 
The DOW will supply all equipment and instruction. Women will learn how to handle a shotgun and will get practice by shooting clay pigeons. Participants will also learn the basics of fly fishing.
 
“We’ll even give some pointers on Dutch oven cooking,” Gillette said.
 
Participants must have a Colorado fishing license and a Colorado Wildlife Habitat stamp. A $20 deposit will be taken, but only to hold a place for the clinic. The money will be returned to participants.
 
Participants can camp at the wildlife area or sleep in the cabin. Those sleeping in the cabin should bring a sleeping bag and pad. Bring your own lunch for July 12, dinner will be provided; breakfast will be provided on July 13.

Women’s Kayaking Workhops June 28-29 In Bozeman

Montana Women KayakingWomen interested in kayaking are invited to a one-day beginners’ class sponsored by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.   The two sessions, June 28 and 29, will be held at Hyalite Reservoir, south of Bozeman in the Gallatin National Forest, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.  

“Kayaking is one of the fastest growing outdoor sports in the country. This course on the basics will enable participants to be confident and ready to join in the fun this summer,” said Liz Lodman, FWP coordinator of the Becoming an Outdoor Woman workshops. The kayak class is an extension of the popular BOW program.

Instructors Marc Bell and Carolyn Sime will demonstrate the basic techniques and equipment needed to kayak on lakes and other flatwater. Topics will include kayak safety and basic paddle strokes. This class does not cover whitewater kayaking.

Participants will work with a variety of stable, non-tippy kayaks including sit-on-top kayaks and sea kayaks.   Participants should be able to swim and will be required to wear their own life jacket or one will be provided. Instructors will also assist during a free paddle time in the afternoon. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Women’s Rock Climbing Workshop Set For June 22 In Helena

Women interested in learning to rock climb may register for a Beyond BOW workshop in Helena, June 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The new class will cover the use of basic climbing gear, including a harness, ropes, carabiners, belay and various anchor devices. Participants will tie into a climbing rope, and learn to belay, rappel and navigate properly over the rock. Leading and anchoring will also be taught.

The class is for beginners or those new to the sport. A short hike on steep terrain is required to access the granite cliffs where the class will be held. Participants should bring a sack lunch and water.

Those with their own harness, protective headgear and rock climbing shoes should bring it, equipment will also be available for loan.

Law - Women in the Outdoors Program

Archery, fly fishing, shotgun target shooting, outdoor cooking, bird watching, crafting with concrete, wine making, tomahawk throwing and self defense: those are just some of the skills women ages twelve and older can learn at the third annual Women in the Outdoors Program scheduled for June 14, 2008 in Huntertown, Indiana.
    
The program is presented by the Three Rivers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and is hosted by the Izaak Walton League. 
 
“Our program is about encouraging women to try new outdoor activities in a safe environment that makes them feel at ease,” said Rob Keck, NWTF CEO.  “This event is also a chance for women of all walks of life-singles, moms, and daughters, young and old-to spend a weekend outdoors, away from home, hanging out and having fun.”
    
Indiana Conservation Officers will be on hand to instruct several of the classes.
    
Registration is under way for the day event that offers twenty-two outdoor-related activities for participants to select.
