11th Elk Hunt Opens in Arkansas With Two Bulls Taken

September 25, 2008

11th Elk Hunt Opens in Arkansas With Two Bulls TakenCOMPTON - For the 11th year, a handful of fortunate hunters went after elk in the Buffalo River country.

They had favorable weather cool nights, warm days and clear skies in their favor. But the hunting was a challenge. One bull elk was taken the first day near sunset, and one was downed the second day near sunset.

Gary Jashinsky Jr. lives in Cabot and is stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base. He had one of four public land permits for the September 2008 hunt and scored with a 6X6 bull elk, meaning six points on each side of its antlers.

Jashinsky eased out into a field in the Hasty area close to the Buffalo River late Tuesday afternoon. He spotted the bull, shot with his .30-06 rifle and hit the bull. But it didn’t go down. Jashinsky fired again and the bull dropped.

The first success of the hunt was on the private land portion of the hunt and this area has a quota of three elk. Kevin Shaddox of Springdale was hunting on land owned by his family near the Boone-Carroll county line.

Shaddox, hunting with his father, Dorwin Shaddox, said they heard one bull elk but didn’t find it. Later in the day they sat in a ground blind, heard another and began using a call. The bull answered. After some more calls, the bull came into good shooting range, 50 yards.

Shaddox fired once with his .300 Magnum rifle, and the 5X6 bull dropped. It was his first elk hunt. Shaddox is 31 and a fleet manager for J.B. Hunt Co.

The September elk hunt will continue through Friday or until the private land permits and the private land quota are filled. Another hunt will be Dec. 8-12.

Leftover Hunting Licenses Available in Wyoming At Automated License Agents

September 2, 2008

Leftover Hunting Licenses Available in Wyoming At Automated License AgentsCHEYENNE– Sales of leftover big game licenses at automated license agents have been very steady, according to Game and Fish license section manager Jean Cole.

“More than 5,000 licenses were sold on Aug. 15, the first day reduced price licenses were available,” said Cole.  “And while this volume put some strain on the system, we are working out the glitches and sales are progressing smoothly.”

Leftover license sales have been averaging more than 700 per day since Aug. 15.

In previous years, regular price licenses left over after the drawings were only sold at Game and Fish offices and leftover reduced price licenses were only sold at license agents.  The Game and Fish would send books of reduced price licenses to agents near the hunt areas where the licenses were valid.  “This gave people in those areas an advantage of obtaining the licenses, ” Cole said, “But it made it difficult for someone who lived a distance from that area to obtain a license.”

Cole said with the new automated system, all hunters have to do is go to any Game and Fish office or one of the 100 fully automated agents in the state and they can obtain a license from that location.   “For example, if a hunter from Cheyenne wanted to obtain a doe antelope license in the Gillette area, a visit to an automated agent in Cheyenne can take care of the licensing.”  A listing of automated agents can be found on the Game and Fish Web site.

Licenses are printed out at the license agent, which saves mailing time and expense, and when a license is sold, the automated system deducts that license from the remaining quota in that hunt area. This information is also reflected on the Game and Fish Web site and makes it easy for hunters to determine the number of licenses remaining in a given hunt area.

Licenses can still be purchased through traditional paper applications from the license section in Cheyenne and those licenses are still being mailed to hunters. Residents are reminded they must be physically present to purchase licenses from license agents.  Resident applications signed and submitted by another person are only accepted at Game and Fish offices.

Hunters with questions on applying for licenses can contact the Game and Fish at (307) 777-4600.

Salmon Fishing Opportunities Increase Along the Washington Coast Beginning Aug. 26

August 26, 2008

Salmon Fishing Opportunities Increase Along the Washington Coast Beginning Aug. 26 OLYMPIA – Anglers will be able to fish for salmon seven days a week along most of the Washington coast beginning Tuesday, Aug. 26, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced today.

The new rules will increase fishing opportunities at Westport (Marine Area 2), La Push (Marine Area 3) and the portion of Neah Bay (Marine Area 4) that lies east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line. Ocean waters west of that line in Marine Area 4 will be closed to all salmon fishing beginning Aug. 26, said Doug Milward, WDFW ocean salmon manager.

“Angler participation has been down along the coast likely due to higher gas prices,” Milward said. “For that reason, we can provide anglers who are fishing at these three ports with additional opportunities without exceeding recreational harvest quotas.”

Fishing had been restricted to five days a week since the season opened.

Anglers fishing at Westport and La Push may retain two chinook salmon as part of their daily limit, but those fishing in Neah Bay may retain only hatchery coho salmon, Milward said. All wild coho must be released in all three areas.

Salmon fishing is scheduled to continue through Sept. 13 if sufficient numbers remain in the quota, Milward said.

Although salmon fishing in Ilwaco (Marine Area 1) closed Aug. 17, fishing continues for hatchery coho at Buoy 10 just south of Ilwaco, Milward said.

New Rules for the Ocklawaha Prairie Public Small Game Hunting Area

August 18, 2008

New rules for the Ocklawaha Prairie Public Small Game Hunting Area - Click Image To View Larger MapThe Ocklawaha Prairie Public Small Game Hunting Area in Marion County has a new permitting process this year.  In an effort to provide an equitable hunting opportunity, daily quota permits are limited to five per person per waterfowl season.  Additionally, the horsepower limit allowed for boat motors on the area has been raised from 10 to 40 to enable hunters to navigate through vegetation more successfully.

“It’s important to create rules and quotas on public lands, such as this one, that allow as many hunters as possible to use the area, without sacrificing hunt quality,” said Jen Williams, hunting coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Northeast Region.

Ocklawaha Prairie Public Small Game Hunting Area is about 2,300 acres, just north of Moss Bluff along the Ocklawaha River and is convenient to Ocala. It is legal to hunt ducks, coots and snipe during the season. Hunters must enter through the check station off 137th Avenue (Old River Road).

Chinook Fishing in Marine Areas 9 and 10 Will Close at End of the Day Friday

August 15, 2008

Click on image to view larger mapOLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is reminding anglers that the recreational fisheries in marine areas 9 (Admiralty Inlet) and 10 (Seattle/Bremerton) will close to the retention of chinook salmon at the end of the day Friday, Aug. 15.

The closure of the mark-selective fisheries for hatchery chinook does not affect recreational fisheries for hatchery coho salmon and other species in marine areas 9 and 10.

“Fishing was slow compared to last year, but it was still a great opportunity for anglers to catch and keep hatchery salmon near a major metropolitan area,” said Steve Thiesfeld, Puget Sound recreational salmon manager for WDFW.

As of Aug. 12, anglers had harvested an estimated 4,767 fish in the marine areas 9 and 10.

Earlier this year, WDFW scheduled the chinook selective fisheries in those two areas to run through Aug. 15, or until a combined quota of 7,000 hatchery chinook salmon is reached. The quota for the two areas reflects constraints established under the Endangered Species Act.

Thiesfeld reminds anglers fishing in marine areas 9 and 10 that regulations vary for inner Elliott Bay, Sinclair Inlet and public fishing piers in those two areas. More information on fishing regulations is available on WDFW’s website http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/regs/fishregs.htm.

Ocean Salmon Sport Season South of Cape Falcon Is Closed

August 15, 2008

The ocean salmon recreational fishery south of Cape Falcon, Ore., to the California boarder has closed effective 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 when the coho quota for the season is expected to be reached. NEWPORT, Ore. — The ocean salmon recreational fishery south of Cape Falcon, Ore., to the California boarder has closed effective 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 when the coho quota for the season is expected to be reached.

“We had a quota of 9,000 hatchery coho this year,” said Eric Schindler, supervising biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. “Strong winds and poor ocean conditions kept many fishermen off the water during the early part of the season, which stretched the season longer than many expected.”

The season opened for fin-clipped coho retention on June 22 with a quota of 9,000 fish. During the week of August 4-10, effort and catch accelerated and brought total landings to 8,462 coho by Sunday evening (94 percent of quota).

Managers expect the quota will be fully attained by Thursday.
